444 Club presents This Love Affair + TWO + The First Seven + Tara

THIS LOVE AFFAIR are: Lee Weston (singer/guitar), Jayme Tovey(drummer/backing vocals), Daniel Tovey (guitar/backing vocals) and Andrew La Touche (bass). The quartet formed in 2005 when Lee and Andrew’s, and Jayme and Daniel’s previous bands, ‘8 Days Late’ and ‘McAlister’, respectively, disbanded.

With a new name and bolstered new image courtesy of stylish photography from NME photographer Dean Chalkley, the band’s re-launch as ‘This Love Affair’ is in full swing.

Fresh from these new beginnings comes their stunning new EP, ‘For The Greater Good’, a collection of epic standing on the edge of the world sized pop gems, formulated amidst swirling guitars and ethereal vocals.

From the hard hitting, anthemic opener ‘Brothers & Sisters’, through to the EP’s brooding closer ‘Vultures’, the lyrical content of all four tracks displays the considered maturity of the band’s heroes, who they cite as ranging from Radiohead to Paul Simon.

Whilst a political conscience is evident in track ‘Brothers and Sisters’, it is not an angle the band peruse relentlessly, and it is a broader consideration for human relationships that is the overriding theme of the four tracks. ‘She’s My Enemy’ is a tongue in cheek account of a relationship’s intricacies and the penultimate track ‘Turn the Page’ is the embittered account of love lost.

TWO:
With sparkling nods towards the rock n roll greats, diverse music and cultural influences, TWO bring together rocking guitar riffs, soaring melodies, thundering bass lines and funky powerhouse drumming. All wrapped up with a contemporary cool new sound.

The art of writing classic hook-laden songs is what TWO are about.
United by a passion for creating great music combined with a huge respect for each other’s musical talents and capabilities, Ray Loverock and Tiff Bryan have created the ultimate band.

TWO add colour back into our bland musical landscape and are a formidable live band, delivering stunningly energized and electrifying shows where they play as a three piece with excellent drummer Dan Guest, who completes the live sound of TWO.

Rock ‘n’ Roll greats with a loved-up pop sensibility....Welcome to the unique sound and look of TWO.

The First Seven:
The First Seven was born out of a passion for the groove,
a love of dirty, heart stopping rock and roll, and a deep
understanding of the need for people to shake their asses,
git down and feel the funk.

Brendan Yates, Gaz Walmsley, and Stephen Marks pretty
much owned the local music scene with their former outfit
Blackballoon, but during recent times found themselves
disillusioned with the current state of the music industry.
They were looking for inspiration, something new…

Pete Murphy, formerly of hard funk rock supergroup honeyman stepped away from the music scene back in 2005, lost his head and his muse, and spent a couple of years in hibernation. Mad at the world, mad at himself, and with no real interest in the current climate of forgettable mediocre rock pap, he had no idea what the next chapter of his life held in store.

Pete was living out of town, but through some hot-ass twist of fate, during the week that he moved back to Birmingham came the phone call from Stephen that would change lives, seal fates and secure the lineup of the most exciting rock and roll act that the West Midlands has produced since Osbourne, Iommi, Butler and Ward tore the western world a new one.

They talked about an intense, raw sound overflowing with catchy yet twisted melodies. They talked about the funk of Sly Stone and Betty Davis, the soul of Stevie Wonder and Aretha, the rock n’ roll groove of QOTSA and James Hall/Pleasure Club, the dark undertones of the Smiths and Suede and the attitude of The Almighty and Motley Crue. They talked about how people might leave a show not necessarily remembering every song they heard, but that their lives will be enriched because of how it made them feel. They talked about groove dripping off the ceiling, walls, and from every open pore……

Early rehearsals in a small, sweaty room produced mile wide
grins, a vibe harder and faster than a freight train, and a general feeling that these four troubled souls were meant to make music together.

Songs came thick and fast, building off the heat, the raw energy, and ummmm… the mistakes. There is beauty in imperfection, don’tcha think?

Brendan, Gaz, Stephen and Pete are The First Seven.

Tara:
Music is her life... Christmas eve, a two year old girl with ringlets in her hair stands on the dinner table and sings every Christmas Carol she knows to her adoring family... In Tara’s home, the record player was always on, her father’s collection of reggae, Ska and Tamla Motown filling her with beautiful tones of Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross to the rhythms of John Holt and Ken Booth. Tara’s Irish mother brought in an eclectic influence of David Bowie, Kate Bush, T Rex, to beautiful singers like David Gates from Bread and Karen Carpenter. Her grand mother, a war baby, sang herself in her youth and encouraged Tara to learn from the best, great singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. Tara's Irish heritage fuelled her interest in songs that tell stories, songs of substance and she carries that with her in the songs she writes today. Some of the artists who continue to inspire Tara include KT Tunstall, Coldplay, Martha Wainwright, Arcade Fire, Ray Lamontagne, Damian Rice and younger artists like Paulo Nutini, James Morrison, Corrine Bailey-Rae, the new artist Adele and Irish hero Damien Dempsey. Growing up in Birmingham, England, Tara sang everywhere and anywhere she could- Birmingham Symphony Hall, The Birmingham Hippodrome, Sunflower Lounge, Glee Club, The Rainbow, Medicine Bar in Digbeth, Bar Fly at the Enterprise and Kashmir Club in London... Tara studied Performing Arts at Stratford upon Avon College but as music sustains her, she followed her heart and sang. In 2004 following a sold-out solo acoustic show, Tara was scouted and signed her first recording and publishing agreement with Zest Music. Zest Music gave Tara the wings to develop her craft over a two year period, flying her to Los Angeles where she wrote Hooba Hooba & The Man from Mars, inspired by the real characters of Venice Beach. Her trip also included a writing stop in Nashville and most importantly an introduction to songwriter Tony Fennell. Kindred spirits, in two weeks they wrote the bare bones of her first album which Tony produced and co-wrote. For her debut album Tara recorded with some great players featuring amongst others Drummer Karl Brazil (performs with James Blunt) and keyboardist Angie Pollock (performed with Goldfrapp and currently on tour with Peter Gabriel). The album was finished by June 2007 and was mixed and mastered by the legendary Hugh Pagham (David Bowie, Sheryl Crow, Sting, Paul McCartney, Genesis etc) and mastered by the talented Bob Ludwig (Bonnie Raitt, U2, Madonna, Radiohead, Dave Mathews. Her album photos were shot with one of the UK's leading young photographers, Martyn Brooks. Tara gave the album the title Night Racing, after a track on the album about her fathers nights working on a racetrack as a bookie and her parents struggle as a young couple raising a family in the 80’s. Night Racing expresses how their love saw them through the tough times. Tara performed live shows in New York City in December which led to her album been launched and released in April 2008 with Australian Label Amphead.
