444 Club present The Motive + Geezer + The Leonards

The Motive:
Formed from the ashes of various West Midlands punk bands, The Motive began to develop their 21st Century take on punk rock in 2004 when Add Jones found himself kicked out of his own band! Not for the last time, it was for his refusal to compromise.

The rest of em just wanted a quiet life in Dudley I guess Im not made that way! remembers Add, when reminded of the roots of The Motive.

Add quickly found a like minded ally in Paul Bradley (Biff) a Birmingham bassist with a deep love of classic punk rock and a legendary refusal to know when to quit.

Paul takes up the story; I knew Add, wed run into each other a few times and Id always thought it would be good if we could work together. So when he told me his old band was falling apart we both knew that wed put something together.

That something started to become The Motive when guitarist Rob Bamber was recruited by a strange twist of fate. Paul; Rob just turned up in the office I was working in as a temp, just at the time we needed a guitarist no need to advertise or audition. The agency just sent him!

To outsiders Rob is seen as the quiet man of The Motive, but with a classical music background, its just a case of give that man a guitar and he will say everything you need to know.

With the line up almost complete The Motive again ignored convention, as Add explains; I knew a drummer from a previous band, hes a cool guy with a unique style so he was the obvious choice

That man was Chris Green and The Motive were born.

The band quickly got to work developing a set of short, sharp songs delivered with razor-edged riffs bringing the band comparisons with early Buzzcocks and the Stooges at one end of the spectrum and The Rakes and Ordinary Boys being cited as current reference points.

Last year saw the band develop a steadily growing fanbase across the Midlands with gigs at Birminghams Artsfest, JBs in Dudley, the Varsity in Wolverhampton and Birminghams Academy 2, among the highlights, along with coverage on Kerrang 105.2 and the BBC TVs new interactive service.

This year the band are set to release a second demo CD, called Pay Attention which sets a new standard for the band as the growing interest from fans, promoters and record companies alike is already proving. With a harder, tighter sound that is the result of the bands dedication and determination fused with their own growing reputation for unmatched adrenalin fuelled live performances.

Get used to it The Motive are coming through get on board or get out of their way. Its gonna be a hell of a ride!

Platform Promotions present Chris Tye + The Musgraves (fka Mathhew Bennett Band) + Jodie Lawrence Band + Aaron Yorke

Chris Tye:
love this city / I met a lot of nice people here

So sings CHRIS TYE on his debut album SOMEWHERE DOWN THE LINE. The city in question is Birmingham, guardian of the Midlands, Englands proud second city and Chris home town. The song is Come Undone, one of eight tracks on what is a startlingly honest offering from a young man who is both shy and confident in equal measures; who smiles yet who holds back, and a man with a lot to say yet preferring and indeed able to convey his thoughts with words so carefully thought out you wonder if every conversation is scripted in his head far in advance. When he does speak you feel drawn to listen. Its a talent that translates well to his songwriting, as people who have heard the record are starting to attest. I love the strings on this track, says Tye thoughtfully as Come Undone plays in the background. I recorded the guitar and vocal live and we added the viola and cello afterwards. He pauses. The song is about reaching a point where change is the only thing that can save you in this case a change of town going home. We all need to go home from time to time. Its probably the most straightforward emotionally raw track on the album…more on his Myspace.
(link below)

The Musgraves:
Fresh out of the Midlands with members hailing from Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Hull The Musgraves are a folk inspired pop five piece.

Formed in 2007 they have already played gigs all over the UK, everywhere from the Birmingham Academy to The Monto Water Rats in London, and their energy fuelled live shows are already making waves in music industry circles, along with snippets in The Birmingham News, Hull Daily Mail and Birmingham Post.

With tracks being championed by the likes of Tom Robinson on BBC 6Music and gaining further airplay across the BBC network the band have recently been invited to play a series of live sessions for BBC Raw Talent.

It won’t be too long before you start hearing more about these guys, but in the meantime the band are focused on completing tracks for their debut album and gearing up for the imminent release of the infectious ‘So Sofia’.

Jodie Lawrence Band:
The Jodi Lawrence Band have a lot to look forward to, Less than a year after forming , they are beginning to intrigue record labels with their combination of original writing and complex musicianship. Drawing in a range of influences, including jeff buckley, A perfect circle and Fleetwood Mac, it is almost too easy to describe their sound as beautiful. Beautiful it certainly is, but also emotionally resonant and often wonderfully unpredictable. Live, may represent something of an experience, fronted by the unashamedly jodi Lawrence who never fails to give her audience the best live performance and a voice that should be heard and definitely will be. Currently based between Birmingham and london this band should be caught now while still playing the smaller intimate venues.

Anyway, during the summer we will be touring around Britain so if anyone wants to lend us a tour bus, your more than welcome but this means being our roadie too. Don't want much do we! If you don't love our music, I'm sure you'll all love Rich who does a (very freakily) similar impression to Stewie, he's worth coming to watch, and Ben who's quite a pingu fan. Freaking Legend Co-op presents - The No Tomorrows + The Fillmore Gears + HINGe + The E-Go’s.

The Fillmore Gears:
Utilizing their fondness for all that is sleaze and heavy the Fillmore Gears have managed to craft the ultimate soundtrack to fighting, f*cking and driving at 150mph with a raised eyebrow!

The Fillmore Gears have been gaining rapid momentum since their first gig in mid-2006, supporting the likes of 1990s and Rose Hill Drive. Formed by Pete, Mak, Dave and Andy united in their adoration of classic rock, they have since wowed audiences with their firebrand, no-holds-barred hard rock. Blazing guitar solos, dirty bass lines, monumental drumming and an unsurpassed vocal style all characterize the potency of the sound.

The best band in the country - Steve Craddock, Ocean Colour Scene

This band are what music has been missing for so long - The Sound Magazine

The No Tomorrows:
"Seize the day and all it brings as for all we know, there could be no tomorrow..."
The core impetus of The No Tomorrows stems from the summer of 2005 when as "Zero 2 Seven" chief songwriter Baz Kane and drummer Peanut embarked on practice sessions in Nottinghamshire, alongside bassist Ben White .
Noted for delivering a high energy foothold as Zero 2 Seven (taking cues from latter-day saints and stoical contempories such as The Police and Smashing Pumpkins), plans were in place....
But they weren't to be - things got murky. Something happened and the band were relocated to a distant memory - great moments to be revisited in that great scrapbook in the blue yonder...
Or Were they?

Reconvening in June 2007 through Peanut albeit cautiously phoning his old bandmate Baz (who already had the formulation of The No Tomorrows purely as a solo studio project) - plans were put in place not to look back, but to step forward and get back in the frame. This brought about the added ingredient which was good friend of Peanuts - and prodigal bass player Tony Start in January 2008.
So Here they are...stronger, impassioned and ready to put an emotive (but never "Emo", they are far too sussed to support mere sloganeering) touch back into an all too noticeable soulless inertia.

The E-Go’s:
The E-Go's are a 5 piece Indie band from The Black Country. The band have been together for just over a year, writing songs about their lives in modern Britain and playing to packed out venues across the region. In late 2007 the lads unleashed their live demo 'The Basement Sessions' which helped promote them into one of the West Midlands best new bands. With their strong, vocal supporters, catchy tunes and energetic live shows The E-Go's are becoming a firm favourite with fans and promoters alike.
To keep up-to-date with the band and to find out when they are coming to a venue near you, keep checking this site for news and information regarding the lads. It would be great to hear feedback from you all and to receive your support. Add the band to become a member of The E-Go Army!

HINGe:
The alt indie-rockers HINGe write songs to be remembered make riffs to be envied and play live with their hearts on the floor, dripping of blood, sweat and tears.
Hailing from the south side of Birmingham, UK, HINGe (HERE to INSPIRE the NEXT GeNERATION) formed in July 2006 and began playing guitar together after drunken nights out. Soon after sobering up, they realised they sounded alright and so the band was born.
Originally meeting through different social circles, foundations were formed early in 2006 when Aaron and John jammed out with their acoustic guitars at John's flat in Acocks Green. Then in the summer of 2006, John's long term school mate Mike returned home from University and fancied a piece of the action!
Having supported American band Babystrange in only their second gig, things looked promising from the start and continued to progress with a support slot in 2008 for the Inspiral Carpets frontman Tom Hingley and The Lovers. With over 70 gigs under their belt, the band's belief in playing live whenever/wherever they can is fundamental to their success so far as an unsigned band.
The trio go from strength to strength with their confidence mounting, musical talent overflowing and spirited performances gaining a reputation, they have played an abundance of headlining shows on home turf and up (and down) the country.
Citing Kings of Leon (Az + John), Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (John) and Blink 182 (Mike) as their most contemporary influences HINGe's musical plethora would take an eternity to list, so let's let the music do the talking shall we?!?!

Neon Sign Graveyard:
Neon Sign Graveyard are a brand new band aiming to bring 60s garage rock back to the masses. They are currently working under the cover of darkness on new material and are have recently started gigging.

Long Road Ghosts:
The Long Road Ghosts are what they are, but look what they can do when you don't remind them of it. Bringing with them their mix off driving, bass pounding rock and roll, well that's what they call it, with tunes full of energetic melodies backed up with a LRG'er than life sound the Ghost's are a must see band.

From the Jamie Croft myspace:
‘I have been singing and playing guitar since the age of 5 and composing since the age of 10. I have never looked back! Every song I write seems to be an improvement on the last and now I am looking at recording my latest material a.s.a.p. 444 Club presents Nate Pilgrim & the Magnificatz + One Eyes Blue + J.D. Smith + Silence Is Dead + NSY DJ’s launch night.

Nate Pilgrim & the Magnificatz:
...the rebels had been scattered to the corners of the country by the time the wind blew the ramblin' nate pilgrim into the rockisland where the magnificatz were about to brew their ‘billy'. seeing the band, nate unslung his 6 string but had not cleared leather before the boys let rip a burning strip of rockabilly that fairly blew the wind right out again. taking 12 paces and turning to the mic, nate loosed a volley of loops and licks that dropped the boys to the dust. soon enough, nate and the ‘catz knew it was right to band together, and to put the whole world behind 12 bars. the story continues….."

One Eyes Blue:
With a little bit of Rock and a little bit of Roll, a little bit of Blues and a little bit of Soul One Eyes Blue’s unique blend of popular music has bought them to the fore-front of the Midlands music scene

One Eyes Blue have recently supported the likes of:

The Zutons, Maximo Park, The Maccabees, Jack Penate, Tiny Dancers, OK GO, The Holloways, Two Gallants, The Thrills amongst many others.

One Eyes Blue have recently travelled to SXSW in Austin, Texas to promote their material on a wider scale.

One Eyes Blue, still in their early 20's, draw upon influences from all over. Their sound has evolved from listening to Rock and Roll, Folk, Blues, Soul, Pop & Country music and admire bands and artists such as Crosby Stills and Nash, Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly, Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Ben E. King, The Stray Cats, Blondie, Neil Young, Son House, Dexy's, Steve Earle, Jonathan Richman.

J.D. Smith:
J.D Smith is a London based solo blues/punk/rockabilly who has been trying for the past 4 years to bring Rockabilly back from the brink and allow this amazing music to gain a larger audience. Having stayed outside of the Rockabilly scene (but some very enjoyable times within), where Rockabilly music has found itself very much alive but stuck, J.D. has played in venues that include the Luminarie (in support of Wanda Jackson) the Barfly (upstairs and downstairs), the Fly, Purple Turtle (Camden), the Cafe de Paris, the Dublin castle, the Hope and Anchor, the Bull & Gate, the Notting hill arts club and the 12 Bar Club.

J.D's debut album '' A Jukebox riot,'' which was recorded earlier this year by Darrel Higham (Modern Rockabilly guitarist), has now been released in HMV and a number of other internet based retail outlets. The album has been picked up by Total Rock's radio station, who carried out an hour long interview for their Rockabilly/country show and a number of underground magazines including Bizarre magazine, the Music Magazine and Bubblegum Slut.

With an idea, a guitar and a heap of Punk rock thrown in J.D. is hoping to wake people up to the idea that a solo act doesn't have to mean folk, it can also be dangerous again.

Freakin Legend Music Co-operative presents Mr Bones and the Dreamers, Girls That Scream + The Jaays + Jimm Zombie + Mr Cricket

From The Jaayz myspace:

“We got together at the end of 2007 as four mates who had all been out of bands for a while and really wanted to get back to playing music. We have a shared appreciation for good songs and sounds and subsequently share different tastes in music from soul and funk to hip-hop, rock and pop. We think these eclectic influences have given us the opportunity to write songs that are difficult to pigeon hole.
We write about the things that influence us as human beings; from poverty to greed to the injustice and general frustrations of modern life. Ultimately however, we like to write and play music that we hope will be listenable and relevant in x years time. We're not outsiders, we're just not influenced by current trends, fashions or what we're told is cool. Although we are cool”

From the Mr Cricket myspace:

“We are Mr Cricket, we are pleased to meet you. Take a seat over there and we will get you a dose of highvoltage calamity...... then we might play some music. We have checked the figures and stocks are up for this week, this is a good thing, but not if you are the ones crushed by the stock’s unbearable weight! If we have any reason to speak today it is in inaudible slurs crushed by the the ’comfy’ lifestyle, we have beg no reason but reason begs us.
Can music represent anything? Can it represent non-plus-ness? We try to say nothing but have all the winks and good charm of the castle jester to question otherwise To a Sleep Deprived Music.”

From Jimm Zombies myspace:

‘“Jimm Zombie is a living representation of Jekyll and Hyde; he is a coin of contrasting sides. On one side a relationship with music, a natural understanding of melody. On the other side, where the queen should be, where monster manifests, is his insecurity, self-doubt and self-loathing. The beauty and tragedy of his music rests on the balance between the two, without which, Zombie would be ‘just another talented man alone with his guitar’.
Similar minded figures in history have cropped up throughout the years, people with incredible talent and an even more remarkable reluctance of themselves; from Frida Khalo to Elliott Smith. People who, without their talent to mark them firmly on the map of what this world perceives as popular forms of expression, would most likely have struggled through life, un-disturbed, attempting to control their own personal demons.
We are talking here about people for whom it’s all in escape of nothing. Not in the respect of fame, fortune or any of the other bullshit we are fed in the ‘pursuit of success’, but in terms of feeling. People who strive for feeling of any kind of emotion to get by, whether it crippling or enlightening, people of a mind frame outside of normal conventions.
This to me is a key underlying theme in Jimm Zombies music. His words seduce emotions and confuse them, “I still love you, I don’t want to”, his lyrics a treasure map of his head, one surprisingly easy for his audience to follow but not, it seems, for he himself.
The treasure, the solution; a gift to us, frustration for him.
If you are fortunate enough to experience the treasure hunt live, don’t be expecting cosy pretty tunes leading you through jungle to the gold. Expect to shiver, expect to dig; expect to feel. Lifting his head rarely from the escape tunnel he is digging with his eyes, Zombie will make you want more and more of him until there is no more to give.
Expect your own greed.”

Capsule present Melt Banana + Mirror! Mirror!

A Japanese noise rock band that was founded in 1992, A maelstrom of experimental heart surgery, Melt Banana walk on water, They effortlessly juggle all of those sharks that think they're swimming in new, unexplored territories. Here are the imported children of the no waves gone by, a hardcore-informed, audio info overload from Tokyo's ferocious underground. MELT-BANANA sweat out a super-adrenalized, maxi-caffeinated collision of frenzied drum rhythms and torturous guitar squeals through tiny, frantic, hyperrhythmic little songs. Frontwoman Yasuko O.'s ultra-high-pitched screeches and Agata's screaming slide guitar vie for supremacy across a rhythmic frenzy that is so ridiculous and precise, it will crush you with its brilliance. Here are the cerebral gnashing guitars, the aggravated pep squad proclamations and the neck-snapping rhythm change-ups irresistible to those seeking a new musical truth. MELT-BANANA doesn't sound like anything you've heard. Simply put, they are unclassifiable.

Capsule present Sunburned Hand of Man + Una Corda

Sunburned Hand Of The Man
"Sunburned Hand of the Man has been an a wild and weird psych collective (I don't even want to classify them as anything as they defy all generalizations and genre peggings) since its inception in Charlestown, Massachusettes way back in 1996. A collective in the most literal sense: the lineup changes, goes through phases; they used to be holed up a Charlestown loft that saw members and contributors come in and out on a regular and frequent basis; none of their releases have been expected or planned terribly far in advance ... they just sort of wax and wane like the moon.

In their tenure as a group, Sunburned has played with a plethora of heavyweights -- from Sonic Youth to Mission of Burma to Dinosaur Jr. -- as well as a myriad other bands, from Magik Markers to Sunn O))) to Wolf Eyes. To say the least, Sunburned has been around, paid its dues, collaborated with the best of 'em, the juniors and the seniors alike." http://www.sunburnedhandoftheman.com/

Una corda hail from Birmingham, England. Featuring two guitarists, two bass players and una drummer, the band features ex-members of illustrious underground acts-Cradle, Marker, Ackbar and Mistress. Their unorthodox line up makes heavy music for light sleepers, a darkly melodic epic soundscape carved out with black headspinning riffs.

Freakin Legend promotions present Telegramme + The Carletons + KateGoes + Mr Bones and the Dreamers

The Carletons:
These four young penwortham lads came together in April 2007 and formed from the splitting of two local bands. Three of the lads, Alex, Jack and Dave, first joined together to form a band on their own. They had known each other since primary school and they soon came up with the name 'The Carletons' for the band. After a month or two of practising together and writing a few ideas they were in search of a drummer to bring the songs and the band together. Soon after, Dave coincidentally came across an old friend at a local gala, Adam, who was a brilliant drummer and without hesitation, they brought him in to the band and 'The Carletons' were complete.

Over the past year The Carletons played their first gig in October 2007, have had radio play on ‘All Access’ in New York, on BBC Radio Lancashire and exposure on Annie Macs Sunday night show on BBC Radio 1. In March the signed to ‘End of The Trail Records’ and in May supported The Subways.
