Shellac
Started in an informal setting between infamous engineer and guitarist Steve Albini (ex-Just Ducky, Big Black, Rapeman) and drummer Todd Trainer (ex-Rifle Sport, Brick Layer Cake) in 1992, Shellac came into full formation after Albini invited bassist Bob Weston (ex-Sorry, Volcano Suns) to move to Chicago, employing him as an engineer at his studio. A clutch of singles soon appeared in 1993 and 1994 on Touch and Go and Drag City, somewhat following in the footsteps of Albini's Big Black and Rapeman, if only due to his trebly, cutting guitar work and deadpan vocals. As with Big Black, Shellac provided a forum for Albini to air his thoughts on the uglier side of humanity, though lowering the perversity and upping the humor a notch. (An early claim was that all Shellac songs concerned either baseball or Canada, sometimes both in the same song.) The odd rhythms of Trainer and rumbling bass of Weston, however, clearly removed Shellac from any of the members' previous involvements.

OM
Formed in 2003 when former Sleep members Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius began to play again after a six year hiatus. The two began rehearsing without the addition of guitar or other instruments. OM's first three albums feature Cisneros (bass/vocals) and Hakius (drums). In January 2008 Hakius left the group. Cisneros recruited drummer Emil Amos and in March of 2008 OM recorded a 7" for Sub Pop records. The song "Gebel Barkal" is the first to feature Amos on drums. Cisneros and Amos are currently writing for the next Om full-length which is to be recorded in early 2009.

Wooden Shjips
(that's not a typo) is a vital and refreshingly inspired quartet from San Francisco playing loud rock 'n' roll in a style heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism and garage rock excess. Starting as an experiment in rhythmic primitivism and group improvisation, the current line-up brings a more structured rock approach to its performances, utilizing a traditional lineup of drums (Omar Ahsanuddin), bass (Dusty Jermier), organ (Nash Whalen), guitar (Erik "Ripley" Johnson) and vocals.

Pissed Jeans
The Straight World is a shallow, boring, soul-sucking vortex. This is where most folks spend their quiet, desperate lives. Working to consume, consuming to achieve status. Distractions like celebrity watching and religion are supposed to provide entertainment and meaning. Here, life on the edge means driving a Ford. It’s nearly impossible for those of us who despise the Straight World to avoid it. Many of us spend 8 hours a day there just to survive. The Straight World doesn’t take kindly to aberrance. That’s why some of us would rather not reveal ourselves. We move like shadows through the Straight World, keeping our secrets. We don’t need smoke to make ourselves disappear.

Lightning Bolt
Lightning Bolt emerged from Providence, Rhode Island in 1995 as a three-piece art school project. Initially there was Brian Chippendale's explosive, non-stop drumming, Brian Gibson's Contortions-like bass lines, and Hisham Bharoocha's vocals propelling them in a fury of volatile noise and orgiastic tribalism. The group helped found Fort Thunder, a music and art collective, and recorded a self-titled album which was issued through Load in 1999. By 2001's Ride the Skies Bharoocha had departed (he eventually formed Black Dice.). This left the vocal duties to Chippendale, who jammed the microphone into his mouth as he drummed. Lightning Bolt did a series of tours with bands like The Locust, Arab on Radar, Orchid, and Melt Banana before returning in 2003 with the studio album Wonderful Rainbow. The album did very well in underground music circles, and set up the release of 2005's Hypermagic Mountain.

Recorded by the OXES in their way fab home studio in the outskirts of Baltimore, the OXES EP is a maddening chunk of rock'n'roll, containing signature OXES' stadium riffage, drum spills and fills, and sense of humor.
But, this release is a turning point in the OXES songwriting as they dabble in more straight forward rock numbers, and more, well mental rock numbers. Playing with time signatures, guitar leads/solos, off kilter rhythms, and even remixing a song, the OXES have taken a step into a slightly new direction.

Curated and produced by NO-FI and [NO.SIGNAL] supported by The Wire magazine to present APPROXIMATELY INFINITE UNIVERSE - A CARAVAN OF RAW SOUND MAGIC FROM FINLAND AND THE US.

Featuring special commissions and unique collaborations from some of the most innovative and exciting acts of Finland’s underground with the superb ISLAJA, the multi-layered KEMIALLISET YSTÄVÄT, the drones of ES and the noise of TOMUNTONTTU (Jan Anderzén) – most represented by the influential and exploratory label FONAL. Each will musically entangle themselves amongst an uncompromising host of Americans, including the home-recorded acid folk of Fursaxa; the MV & EE member SAMARA LUBELSKI, the ‘Terry Riley-fused with Kate Bush’ impossibility of Axolotl, the ‘coal-powered spacecraft from some steampunk parallel universe’ that is BLEVIN BLECTUM and the noise duo from SKATERS.

Each performance a unique and brand new collaboration, each of the acts features a combination of Finnish artists from FONAL, who have invited a US counterpart to collaborate on a composition, highlighting the parallels in strands of the recent evolving trend of ‘weird/avant folk’ between the US West coast and Finland’s northern communities.

The performances will be made of material composed in the months leading up to the tour and worked in 2 days rehearsal. The concerts will take the form of two acts with the 4 groupings rotating during each act.

ES (FI)
ES is the solo recording name of Fonal boss Sami Sänpäkkilä - tagged as 'Experimental Songcycles' by The Wire's David Keenan - and one of the main figures in contemporary Finnish free folk mouvement. Sami is not only a musician but also a renowned filmaker.

FURSAXA (US)
Tara Burke of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania employs voice, guitar, organ, dulcimer, accordion, Casio and more to create her home-recorded acid folk as Fursaxa. Her debut album Mandrake was produced, engineered, and released in Japan by none other than Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple.

ISLAJA (FI)
Islaja is Merja Kokkonen, a young visual artist and musician based in Helsinki, Finland. She has discretely become one of the few figures hiding behind the recent fad of "folk weirdness" whilst being part of a somehow communal move of a "Finnish psychedelia" that has spread its wings within the underground sounds over the last two years.

SAMARA LUBELSKI (US)
Samara is a native New Yorker who grew up in the haze of artist infestation of Soho. Through the time of playing in various groups she has compiled an impressive resume that covers myriad of genres such as her work with the avant/psych/folk outfit of Hall Of Fame into the lair of those bohemian German musos Metabolismus and onto the indie rock interpretations of The Sonora Pine with some serious treks into the world of The Tower Recordings and off world with Jackie O Motherfucker, to name just a few.

BLEVIN BLECTUM (US)
Blevin Blectum is an electronic musician. Recently relocated from the industrial armpit of Oakland, California, to the humid lovecraftian greenery of Providence, Rhode Island, Blevin releases her fourth solo album, GULAR FLUTTER, on an unsuspecting public via the AAGOO label (New York). Blevin is one half of the recently reformed and reunited groundbreaking digital duo Blectum From Blechdom, recipients of the 2001 Ars Electronica Award of Distinction in Digital Musics.

KEMIALLISET YSTÄVÄT (FI)
The name of a recording project of musician Jan Anderzén of Tampere, Finland. Anderzén began recording under the name in 1995 and although he has enlisted numerous musicians over the years, most Kemialliset Ystävät recordings are solo productions. Often labeled as psych folk, his recordings have included such diverse instruments as detuned guitars, mandolins, balalaikas, toys, hand percussion, and samples from recordings by Sun Ra, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Vibracathedral Orchestra.

AXOLOTL (US)
Axolotl is Karl Bauer, classically-trained violinist and a dedicated student of gnosticism, alchemy, astrology, and certain other materialist tendencies in psychology and philosophy. Bauer belongs to a small but potent association of young musicians, who draw upon the gestural economy and textural range of minimalism, and the visceral force of noise, while eschewing fashionable prohibitions against musicality, raw beauty, and thematic complexity.

TOMUTONTTU (FI)
The visual artist and musician Jan Anderzén (1978) is one of the central figures of the Finnish underground, and his band Kemialliset ystävät has gained international popularity among fans of experimental and psychedelic music.

SKATERS (US)
“Staggering low-grade psychedelic murk and splintered free jazz soul” says David Keenan (The Wire). The skaters are from southern California and consist of Spencer Clark and James Ferraro who met in 2002. The duo say that the substance of their music is defined by “the interplay of ideas and the transformation of themselves into characters while playing and while living and using the inner dialogue that comes with cognizing the symbols of the outside world as a ground for the music to stand”. The music for them becomes deeply psychological because they experience “hallucinogenic sensations” while playing. The "thing" they think is a phenomenon can only be experienced through playing.

Ben Pike:
Ben Pike is a singer/songwriter based in Leeds who plays soulful bluesy folk. Drawing heavily on influences such as Kelly Joe Phelps, Nick Drake, John Martyn etc. Ben has forged his own style of bluesy finger picked guitar and a subtle soulful voice. Ben is playing regularly in and around Leeds as well as venturing down to London from time to time.

Butler Williams:

"...BUTLER WILLIAMS...live equation is nothing less than a revelation...their sound is that found at the cutting edge of modern Mancunian acoustica. “Got no job but I got leads..” goes one line almost like a calling card, as Chris Butler and Noel Williams demonstrate that they are purveyors of great vocals and some damn impressive guitar work too. Witty, beautiful and adventurous are terms that you’d expect to find on a dating website, but Butler Williams are literally wearing the T-Shirt. Well not literally, but they do wheel out a mini glockenspiel on “Only A Few” and of course the now famously reported Theremin. There’s a song about getting a good kicking at a Withington Kebab shop but it's sound tracked by a remarkable timbre and cocktail of sounds that conjure up more flavours than a fine red wine; the soundtrack to Tales From The Riverback 2008; Damien Rice on Hathersage Road; Badly Drawn Boy in Tescos; The Smiths if they had been sponsored by Takemine. Just make one up – it doesn’t matter really, as with all good music, the tunes do the talking with “You’re My Star” being just one good example. Ones to watch - and I’ll certainly be doing that again..."

A esto hay que sumarle, las ganas insaciables que tienen ambos por descubrir nuevos sonidos, traspasando fronteras y avanzando un pelin en el tiempo, mirando de reojo pero sin hacer ningun asco al hype del momento. Imogens Kiss:
"I didn't think it was one of my best when I first wrote it," recalls singer/songwriter/guitarist Adam Wilson. "But when we play it, it's the song that people comment on the most. I guess we were made to pick it as our first single."

Viva La Diva is the first Digital Download single from Imogen's Kiss. Filled with their trademark songwriting hooks and harmonies, Viva La Diva is a tale of love, loss and being there for the girl... even if she did leave you. "It's about a girl I know. There are some references to real life hidden in the lyrics, so hopefully she won't realise it's about her. But the aspect of her and me being in a relationship is fictional. You just need that angle to make the song and the lyrics come full circle." explains Adam "And the la, la, la, la's are for everyone to sing along to." he adds with a smile.

Imogen's Kiss are Adam Wilson, Paul Dawson, Dave Harris and Kev Thompson. Formed early in 2006, they have concentrated mainly on playing in their local area of Tamworth and Birmingham in a bid to drum up a local fan base, before beginning to spread the word of Imogen's Kiss further.

In 2007 they began working with M.A.S Records who they would record Viva La Diva with. "We're lucky in that we don't have to pay for things like studio time, M.A.S provide us with that as well as any promotional material. These kind of things are costly and not all bands have the finances to do it. Especially when there are very few gigs that pay or bands are relying on ticket sales, of which they'll only get a percentage. We get on well with the people from M.A.S. They're a great bunch of people." Adam construes.

The Maker Band
The Maker Band is a new one-man-band creation described as ‘portable rock n roll’.
Frontman Jonny Amos has already tasted success in the music industry following the charting triumph of his Australian underground no.9 hit ‘Sarah Jane’ and now the multi-instrumentalist launches his unique blend of rock, beat-box and hooks to the world. He Says “The Maker Band concept is simple. You don’t need to form a band when you can make one. There’s two art forms in music, the art of recording and the art of performing. I have fused the two by creating a multi phrase live looping set up to my live act allowing me to play everything in the band, record it and perform it in front of people’s eyes.”
Amos has sessioned for big label artists alongside being a well respected jingle writer for such commercial radio stations as Galaxy FM and Kiss FM before spending 3 years in the much hyped UK rock group, Red Star Rebels. Having toured with numerous big name bands, worked with numerous top name producers and built up a huge nationwide fan base “The Rebels” were dubbed “The hardest working band in the business” by Industry insider Paul Bay. Having built up a media frenzy with numerous celebrity fans and being awarded with ‘Best Rock Act’ at the 2007 Indy Awards, Jonny left the band to concentrate wholly on the project that had been “rattling around in my head for years”, the hotly anticipated Maker Band. “I don’t do name dropping or bullshit talk. I leave that for those who aren’t happy with what they actually have in life” quipped the outspoken singer in a 2008 interview with Timeout magazine.
“I’ve written hooks, jingles and soundtracks in the past but now its time to put something truly original out there. This industry is changing hugely and the artist is back in control. Trust me when I tell your readers that I’m at the forefront of something that’s never been done before in modern music. I don’t need a band and I don’t need a label. Watch what happens.”
The Maker Band look set to release debut album ‘Based on True Stories’ in 2009.

Call this a Comeback:
Call This A Comeback are an independent four piece pop punk outfit from Staffordshire. They formed in May 2008 and are the product of ex members of punk rock band Vigilante, pop punk band Lost ‘N’ Found and solo guitarist/singer/songwriter Seth Row. Their sound reflects a combination of influential bands, such as Blink 182, Allister, Screeching Weasel and MXPX to name a few.

Japanese psychedelic band founded in 1995 by members of the Acid Mothers Temple soul-collective. The band is led by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and early in their career featured many musicians but by 2004 the line-up had coalesced with 4 core members and frequent vocal guests.
The band have a reputation for phenomenal live shows and releasing frequent albums on a number of international record labels, as well as the Acid Mothers Temple family record label which was established in 1998 to document the activities of the whole collective.

Mirror! Mirror! Are a rowdy bunch of lads from small town called Nuneaton, in Warwickshire.
After 4 years of DIY shows up and down the country the dance-tastic troupe have built a strong fan base, both with the underground crowd and people who just like to dance.
2008 is looking busier and busier for the M! M! boys with a cassette just out on Stop Scratching, a download / 7” single being released on 28th March through ondryland and Holy Roar Records. Freakin Legend Co-op presents Myspace Madness ‘2’.

Those of you who were at the Island Bar in Birmingham on November 23rd last year will know what the MySpace Madness party was all about. FLCO decided to bring a load of people who had previously only met each other online together to enjoy a night of booze and music. We had local bands playing - Télégramme, Copious, Big Ice Gem and The Celturian. It was a wonderful night with a superb atmosphere, great music, a packed club and a bunch of people making new friends. This year its happening again…

Hatework conspiracy aka Hatework. formed 98/99. Born out of the love of punk,oi! n metal,Mac,Will n Fraz. We set out to find a singer and guitarists to complete the line up. We hired our local hall and started to put on gigs to support the DIY music scene. A few years, a couple of singers, guitarists later. We were back to us 3.Mac took over vocals, we started gigging on the DIY punk scene Liverpool, Midlands and London. We recorded our first demo in 2000,from which the track Nothings free was released on the album Punk shit vol 1. In 2001 we recorded our first full length album Power to reason, the title track was released on Departure records compilation Words will never be action.2002 we recorded Control EP .2003 the Control EP was released on Punk shit split album Middleground. 2004 we re-recorded tracks from Power to reason album and added tracks from the Control EP to release Hatework 2000-2004 compilation.2004, the track Point of view was released on the USA label Hussieskunkrecords compilation Binge smoking and chain drinking, in the same year we had changed our name to Hatework Conspiracy due to the fact there were a number of bands with same name. we went on to record our second full length album Hatework conspiracy. We then took a break for a while doing the odd gig now and again. We have finished recording new album jan 08 and are looking for gigs.’

Arceye are a Death/Thrash Metal band from Shropshire formed in 2004.
Arceye was first formed under the name ’Naked Flame’ by founding members Dave Roberts, Al Llewellyn, and Josh Davies. ’Naked Flame’ began as a heavy ’Metallica’ influenced band but soon evolved into the heavy riffs and thrash melodies that are the sound of Arceye today.
After a gig with Naked Flame singing a cover of Metallica’s Seek and Destroy, Harry Aldridge joined the band, and with him he brought along Matt Lawrence who played rhythm guitar. They both joined the band in 2004 and with a new line up the band were re-named Arceye. Between 04 and 05 Arceye Played many Local gigs and festivals, Building a strong fan base in the Shropshire Area.

The Carletons:
These four young penwortham lads came together in April 2007 and formed from the splitting of two local bands. Three of the lads, Alex, Jack and Dave, first joined together to form a band on their own. They had known each other since primary school and they soon came up with the name 'The Carletons' for the band. After a month or two of practising together and writing a few ideas they were in search of a drummer to bring the songs and the band together. Soon after, Dave coincidentally came across an old friend at a local gala, Adam, who was a brilliant drummer and without hesitation, they brought him in to the band and 'The Carletons' were complete.

Over the past year The Carletons played their first gig in October 2007, have had radio play on ‘All Access’ in New York, on BBC Radio Lancashire and exposure on Annie Macs Sunday night show on BBC Radio 1. In March the signed to ‘End of The Trail Records’ and in May supported The Subways.

Integra, a 3-year project led by the Birmingham Conservatoire in the UK and part financed by Culture 2000. To develop a new software environment to make music with live electronics, modernising works that use old technology.
We are delighted that the closing Integra 2008 Festival & Conference will be held in Birmingham. Building on the work of the project, the Festival will bring to Birmingham the five participating ensembles for an unprecedented 3-day perspective on European live electronic music, with a special focus on mixed-media performances. The Conference aims to spark a discussion around technology and music bringing together artistic promoters and decision makers, researchers, composers and performers. It is a rare occasion to debate across different domains the challenges and opportunities new technologies bring to music, and how to solve the existing tensions between musicians and technology.

The Bays incorporate a classical ensemble into their improvisd electronic performance, using a unique system of real-time music scoring devised by The Bays and projected for the audience to see as well as hear.

The Bays do not believe in rules. The Bays do not make records. They do not rehearse or prepare their entirely improvised live performances. The style of their music ranges from ambient electronica to thundering Drum and Bass, touching all points in between. The four-piece group have taken this project all across the world, performing on massive international stages, in crowded and cramped club rooms, at outdoor festivals, in theatres and even boats. Each performance is new, each idea unprecedented, each appearance a particular adjustment to fit the demands of venue and crowd.

Now, in keeping with this philosophy of uncompromising evolution, for the Integra festival in Birmingham, The Bays have devised a unique system combining computer software and old-fashioned human communication to incorporate an orchestral ensemble. With a classical ensemble, and a team of guest composers led by John Metcalfe, The Bays will combine live electronica and classical ensemble playing in an entirely improvised performance.

Forget what you think "live music" actually means. This music will be created on the spot, in front of the audience, never to be played, heard or experienced the same way again

Diamonds come from the most unlikely places. Deep down in the rock one must dig, delve and get dirty for that rarest of stones. Very, very occasionally however you just trip over one as if by accident and things begin to look up – multi faceted and catching the light in just the perfect way. Such is this writer’s discovery of the titular Mr. Finch and his dirty band. Deep in the heart of Coventry, around the corner and up the alley at The Hope and Anchor, there was a musical happening this weekend which restored one’s faith in hitting the motherlode of finely crafted, independent and YOUNG Americana influenced music. Under the auspices of the Sid Norris Organisation ( a local arts promotion concern) a number of talents took to the stage. All was good but imagine the surprise when the enthusiastic dancers in the audience supporting the other acts turned out to be the day’s highlight The Dirty Band. A precursor of things to come entertainment wise, obviously. The thing about rough diamonds is that they need polishing. Not too much but just the requisite amount to make them shine and sparkle. And this is where Wes and the band are at. They can play their instruments alright – accomplished but sufficiently care free to give the tunes the dirty edge. There’s a whole mix in there – the usual acoustic guitar, electric guitars, beautifully brushed drums, a lead guitarist playing bass and a stand in on lead guitar replacing an errant bassist. Add to that the banjo player, the backing vocalist playing djembe and kabbas, the extraordinarily bejewelled Brian Lea on gob iron and the female duettist exuberantly dancing her socks off. What’s not to like? In their tunes they reference plenty of Americana favourites (such as in ‘No Drama’ in which Annie is encouraged once more to ‘take a load off’ – hey, if you’re going to wear your influences on your sleeve you might as well reference the best) even covering The Kings of Leon in a Coventry-stylee - ‘Velvet Snow’ re-written with testosterone replaced by oestrogen. There’s plenty of original material on offer too – “The Pact” for example which deals with every artist’s nightmare about having a soul to sell. There’s more on offer in this nine number strong set too – unfortunately in order to hear it you must make contact with the band to acquire their self produced demo cd or – and here’s the exciting bit – wait a short while for their debut bona fide release.

Neil Ivison & The Misers is the much anticipated debut of former Seymour/The Fever/Shakedown frontman Neil Ivison.
The Shakedown conquered the midlands with melodic rock tunes and a raw live appeal and now Ivison has cast aside pretence and interwoven nuances of the past and the present into everyday musical and lyrical vulnerability.
This new project tastes the five flavours of country, rock, blues, funk, and pop underpinned with prominent, soulful guitars and elegantly simple arrangements.
Neil's voice, a fusion of whispered harmony, and growling rough tones, is rich, provocative and moody, his songs an insightful and engaging personal journey, reflective, heartfelt and beautifully paced.
For Britains very own Man In Black, Neil's latest is but the start of things to come for a young artist and fresh new talent already on the radar of major record labels.

Fresh from these new beginnings comes their stunning new EP, ‘For The Greater Good’, a collection of epic standing on the edge of the world sized pop gems, formulated amidst swirling guitars and ethereal vocals.

From the hard hitting, anthemic opener ‘Brothers & Sisters’, through to the EP’s brooding closer ‘Vultures’, the lyrical content of all four tracks displays the considered maturity of the band’s heroes, who they cite as ranging from Radiohead to Paul Simon.

Whilst a political conscience is evident in track ‘Brothers and Sisters’, it is not an angle the band peruse relentlessly, and it is a broader consideration for human relationships that is the overriding theme of the four tracks. ‘She’s My Enemy’ is a tongue in cheek account of a relationship’s intricacies and the penultimate track ‘Turn the Page’ is the embittered account of love lost.

RASE are an exciting new band born out of the midlands. A fantastic live band with great musicians and better songs, rase set high expectations and deliver.
2007 promises to be a big year for the lads, they are attracting management / label interest and have material for their second album ready to go.

A joyful noise comprises a Comets show, with Miller’s vocals being driven through an echoplex and re-shaped at will by fellow member Noel Von Harmonson. The Sudofuzz is a collision of oscillators, feedback networks and distortion housed in a junk tin can with grip bolts and electrode-controllers. Collective noise creation on a mass scale.

Takes place at the Hare and Hounds and is £10 advanced.

'Chris Corsano - a kinetic DIY drummer [one of the world's most exciting -
currently BJORKS' drummer] - uses this project to inject some punk tabla-type
rolls into being while Mike Flower - an incendiary guitar player - also plays
the "shaahi baaja" or "japan banjo" from India in an amazing solo style and
transcendent manner. As a powerful and loud guitar/drum duo, Lightning Bolt
comparisons come cheap, but the Flower-Corsano Duo are something else; more like
a punk-jazz-trash Konono No1, they have that special power to elevate through
noise, rhythm and special harmonies. This is an experience the audience wants to
have, an exhilarating sight/sound that shudders the body and cleanses the
mind.Michael Flower is best known as a member of Leed's Vibracathedral
Orchestra, a lynchpin of the improvising rock/noise/drone world. He has also
played with legendary artists such as Tony Conrad and Jandek as well as in
projects such as the trio with Matthew Bower + C. Spencer Yeh.Vibracathedral's
close relationship with Sunburned Hand Of The Man has meant MF has toured with
them across the USA and Europe, both as a member and solo.'

I've often been a fan of the kind of artists Capsule get to play in Birmingham. It's always seemed to cater for my need to hear music that sometimes can be dark, noisy and punishing, to other times when it can be beautifully made and melodic - regardless, both often remark a certain high quality that is the footprint of Capsule nights.

Thursdays gig at the Hare and Hounds is on the more melodic side of things and features Efterlang and Our Broken Garden. Its £10 in.
