Coming Up.......

An extra long blog this week. I got thinking and have decided to change the listings so they run from Monday to the following Sunday. That's why you get from Friday 28th March to Sunday 6th April this week.

This way you can see what's happening next weekend way before it happens and I get more time at the weekend to find out what's on. Perfect!

Just before I tell what you've got coming up over the next week it's worth pointing out that
all entries have links on them, so if you want to find out more about an event you can be using them. Also please check out the myspace (
link here) as all my friend links are either promoters, venues or artists and there maybe something there your'd like as well.

This week on the 'Coming Up Birmingham' blog: Indie, Drum 'n' Bass, Post Punk, Dubstep, Electro, Soul, New Wave, Minimal Techno, Punk Rock, Hip-Hop, Beats, Rock 'n' Roll, Funk, Bass, Electronica and again some stuff thats avoids easy labelling altogether.

(Promoters & Arstists:If you're a promoter or artist and want to mention what you're doing then the best way to get hold of me is through the myspace page >>link here. If you have flyers for any future events, regardless to how far away it is, send me a copy and I'll put it up on myspace for everyone to see.)
Why not add this page to your favourites to make it easier to find out what's happening each week.

Dorian Wood is starting off his UK tour at The Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath this Friday.

This was taken from his myspace:

'DORIAN WOOD's rich, haunting melodies and deeply personal tales of heartbreak and working-class fury are elevated by his spiralling warble/wail/battle cry, echoing the unflinching rawness of Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. Each live performance is heavy with the soul's ugliest truths, yet no two Dorian Wood shows are alike.'

There are quite a few songs on his myspace, but if I were to have to recommend one check out 'The Real live at Bordello'.

Also on the night are Birmingham's Friends of the Stars. It all starts around 8pm.

I've often been a fan of the kind of artists Capsule get to play in Birmingham. It's always seemed to cater for my need to hear music that sometimes can be dark, noisy and punishing, to other times when it can be beautifully made and melodic - regardless, both often remark a certain high quality that is the footprint of Capsule nights.

Thursdays gig at the Hare and Hounds is on the more melodic side of things and features Efterlang and Our Broken Garden. Its £10 in.

For more info and to here music just click on artist and promoter names for links to their websites.

Coming Up On.....Friday 14th March 2008

Indie, Rock, Garage, Punk, House, Techno, Electro and Drum ‘n’ Bass - it's all happening this week.

The Cross,Moseley

Platform Promotions starts us off with The Brascoes, Zebedy Rays, Wasted Saints and The Graham Liquidiser Torture Tank playing from 8pm. £4 in.

Headliners The Brascoes are danceable indie. They won last years Surface Unsigned Festival and have recently been on BBC WM’s Introducing show. Wasted Saints are a mix rock and indie while The Graham Liquidiser Torture Tank is not for the music fan that takes themselves too seriously, but you might have guessed that from their name.

For me the pick off the bunch is the Zebedy Rays. It’s rock, but don’t let my lame journalistic tag put you off because this is raw, exciting and melodically encapsulating . The ZR’s real skill comes in their live performance -manic and energetic.

Check out there single ’18 and Wondering’ on Myspace.

The Rainbow in Digbeth seems to have gone from strength to strength over the past year with more diverse gigs and club nights occurring on a regular basis.

This Friday 444club presents The Indigo’s and My Device both playing angular indie/ garage/punk. Support comes from The Joe Fox Band and Strangetime + resident DJ’s. Starts at 8pm and £4 in.

The regular night held every 2nd Friday of each month plays everything from house, indie, breaks, techno, disco, funk, electronica, club classics and Hip-Hop. In their own words ‘Our Music policy is simple: anything goes as long as people dance.’ (Check out the dress code.) 9pm-2am, £3 in.

Drum ‘n’ Bass Decision Time!!

Two Drum ‘n’ Bass legends, two events, one night.

If D’n’B is your thing then you’ll have to make a decision on which one of these two events you want to be at on Friday 14th.

Legend One: DJ Fresh

This guy was a member of Bad Company who gave us the classic tune ‘The Nine.’ He was founder of BC recordings and the D’n’B website Dogs on Acid. Linking up with Adam F he formed Breakbeat Kaos, that brought club favorites Pendulum to the U.K. DJ Fresh is one of the most highly regarded and popular D’n’B producers in this country, and he brings his Sound Weapon event to the Custard Factory.

This guy has been there since day dot in D’n’B, touring worldwide and owner of the legendary Blackmarket Records in Soho, London. Always encouraging innovation in the scene, he knows how to please a crowd with his selection of tunes. For those of you that didn’t catch him at the D’n’B awards or at The Hare and Hounds recently here’s another chance.

Coming Up On......Monday 17th March 2008

Mob Monday is a weekly club/gig night held at The Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath. It mainly, but not exclusively features local bands.

This week its The Brascoes and Sculptors. The Brascoes are making the short trip from Friday nights gig in Moseley to Kings Heath, with more of their ‘spiky, danceable indie.’ Sculptors combine British indie with just the right amount of ska not to sound contrived.

Coming Up On.....Thursday 20th March 2008

No excuses for not starting the weekend early this week, especially as this is the night before Good Friday. No work, uni, college or unemployment, well still unemployment, but you see what I'm getting at - it's a day off!

Hott Date @ The Rainbow have French electronic duo Kap Bambino performing their energetic dirty edged electro pop live. Guest DJ’s are Discomendments who specialize in re-editing and making the familiar seem unfamiliar, while making you dance. Quite a skill. It all starts at 8pm.
