Platform promotions present 95th Rifles + The Jaayz + Silent Riot

95th Rifles
“The Youthful quadrille known as the Ninety Fifth Rifles have been patrolling the streets of Birmingham in hopes of musical inspiration since there joint birthing in December a year or so gone. The musical search has been, on occasion, interrupted by philandering philanthropists and the odd drunken scoundrel. You may have noticed the moonlit faces of Sam ,Richard ,Lewis and Louis traipsing around the streets of Moseley and Kings Heath. (& HG!)”

From the Silent Riot myspace:
“We are Silent Riot, Silent Riot are four 'Indie Punksters' from Birmingham U.K (the mystical , magical litle town called Rubery!), who started in July '07, and are currently making their name throughout Birmingham and further afield. We love making dancable, upbeat tunes for all the kids to dance to and currently we and are gigging vigorously to win the hearts, ears and dancing bones of you, the cool people and ever increase our fanbase. Our influences come heavily from classic punk bands such as The Ramones as well as more modern sounds like Bloc Party and Editors. As well as writing and playing our own material, we have been known to wow the crowds with our interpretations of unusual covers such as S-Club 7 and B*witched. I say no more...”

Freakin Legend Music Co-operative presents Mr Bones and the Dreamers, Girls That Scream + The Jaays + Jimm Zombie + Mr Cricket

From The Jaayz myspace:

“We got together at the end of 2007 as four mates who had all been out of bands for a while and really wanted to get back to playing music. We have a shared appreciation for good songs and sounds and subsequently share different tastes in music from soul and funk to hip-hop, rock and pop. We think these eclectic influences have given us the opportunity to write songs that are difficult to pigeon hole.
We write about the things that influence us as human beings; from poverty to greed to the injustice and general frustrations of modern life. Ultimately however, we like to write and play music that we hope will be listenable and relevant in x years time. We're not outsiders, we're just not influenced by current trends, fashions or what we're told is cool. Although we are cool”

From the Mr Cricket myspace:

“We are Mr Cricket, we are pleased to meet you. Take a seat over there and we will get you a dose of highvoltage calamity...... then we might play some music. We have checked the figures and stocks are up for this week, this is a good thing, but not if you are the ones crushed by the stock’s unbearable weight! If we have any reason to speak today it is in inaudible slurs crushed by the the ’comfy’ lifestyle, we have beg no reason but reason begs us.
Can music represent anything? Can it represent non-plus-ness? We try to say nothing but have all the winks and good charm of the castle jester to question otherwise To a Sleep Deprived Music.”

From Jimm Zombies myspace:

‘“Jimm Zombie is a living representation of Jekyll and Hyde; he is a coin of contrasting sides. On one side a relationship with music, a natural understanding of melody. On the other side, where the queen should be, where monster manifests, is his insecurity, self-doubt and self-loathing. The beauty and tragedy of his music rests on the balance between the two, without which, Zombie would be ‘just another talented man alone with his guitar’.
Similar minded figures in history have cropped up throughout the years, people with incredible talent and an even more remarkable reluctance of themselves; from Frida Khalo to Elliott Smith. People who, without their talent to mark them firmly on the map of what this world perceives as popular forms of expression, would most likely have struggled through life, un-disturbed, attempting to control their own personal demons.
We are talking here about people for whom it’s all in escape of nothing. Not in the respect of fame, fortune or any of the other bullshit we are fed in the ‘pursuit of success’, but in terms of feeling. People who strive for feeling of any kind of emotion to get by, whether it crippling or enlightening, people of a mind frame outside of normal conventions.
This to me is a key underlying theme in Jimm Zombies music. His words seduce emotions and confuse them, “I still love you, I don’t want to”, his lyrics a treasure map of his head, one surprisingly easy for his audience to follow but not, it seems, for he himself.
The treasure, the solution; a gift to us, frustration for him.
If you are fortunate enough to experience the treasure hunt live, don’t be expecting cosy pretty tunes leading you through jungle to the gold. Expect to shiver, expect to dig; expect to feel. Lifting his head rarely from the escape tunnel he is digging with his eyes, Zombie will make you want more and more of him until there is no more to give.
Expect your own greed.”

Robot Professor presents Glissando + Her Name is Calla + Support

From the Glissando myspace:

“The basis of Glissando has always been built around Elly May Irving and Richard Knox. Previous years have been spent adding and subtracting members, playing shows here and there; some improvised, some not so. The duo have released a number of very limited edition CDR's on Gizeh and Loom, and last year gathered together a body of previous work to release 'Loves Are Like Empires', a wonderfully packaged CDR of old recordings, demos and live performances.

The path of Glissando to this point has often been a rocky one. Last year Elly and Richard's long term relationship broke down and Glissando's future was thrown into huge doubt. There was a lot of soul-searching to be done around that time but some light was found as a support slot to the wonderful Stars of the Lid was offered at the beautiful Holy Trinity Church in Leeds. This moment was too good to pass and the show was probably the best of the band's career to date. A corner was turned and Glissando's future suddenly looked a damn sight brighter. Plans were made to go and record in Leicester with Tom Morris (Her Name is Calla) and this period of enlightenment turned out to be 'With Our Arms Wide Open We March Towards the Burning Sea'. With help from some beautiful friends, what once seemed destined for failure now has limitless ambitions.

'With Our Arms Wide Open We March Towards the Burning Sea' is probably best listened to at night., I'm not trying to rule your life or anything - just a friendly nudge in the right direction. It has a dark, gentle heartbeat that opens up an atmosphere lost and bleak, but through Elly May's vocal there is always a sense of wonder, a thought that something otherworldly is occurring. There is an ambience to the record that throws it into the vein of some of the Kranky labels releases but it's more orchestral than that, there's more melody and a lyrical content that just seems to suck you in and hold you close. The closing lines of 'Floods' in which Elly May, Richard and Tom Morris (Her Name Is Calla) are all chanting "You were on fire as they ran to hold the flames, we did not see, so the water never came" is an album highlight, backed by Angharad Cooper's (Held By Hands) soaring violin it has a touch of the likes of Efterklang to it before fading to a shimmering drone section to finish.

Glissando's previous comparisons have been to such visionaries as Low and Rachel's, the later is more apparent in 'Always the Storm' which is almost classically based in its mood and ambience. As the record comes to a close 'Grekken' is another highlight as it's dark tones and an ending of "You made me kill myself" wrap around you. The added vocal of Dave Martin (iLiKETRAiNS) serves a haunting purpose and it throws you into an almost dream-like state before the album closer of 'Our Flags Wave and Our Arms Are Around Another's Shoulder's' lulls you back into that comfortable place that you know so well.

The fact that Glissando have pulled together to make a full-length record is important enough but hopefully creating something as beautiful and as endearing as this will mean just that little bit more.”

Her Name is Calla – some reviews on their music and new album:

"This extremely talented band, fundamentally experimental in nature, defies any attempt to describe them using only one set of adjectives.....I guess what I’m saying is this: Her Name Is Calla is a brilliant band with an even more brilliant future ahead of them. This album comes extremely recommended. 8/10"
The Silent Ballet

"...there can be no denying that Her Name Is Calla are one of the most daring, unconventional bands the UK has to offer right now. For that alone we should all be exceedingly thankful. 8/10"
Drowned in Sound

"This is a serious contender for the most affirming alternative rock release of the year, and at this stage one can only imagine and anticipate what the debut proper will sound like.9/10"
Drowned in Sound User Review

"The Heritage' opens as it means to go on claustrophobic, disconnected and disconcerting - it's bloody great...As post rock becomes something tired, dull and predictable, Her Name Is Calla have created something that could not only invigorate, but save the genre and give it it's 'Rebirth'. This album doesn't just hint at greatness, it brazenly wears it tattoo'd across its forehead."

Electronic Pleasures presents a night of various electronic genres with The Audacity + Wonderful Life + Johnny Normal + Beats Per Minute

Johnny Normal:
“Johnny Normal creates a musical bag of 'Englishness' that finds its roots in pop, punk and electronic music from the 1980s onwards. Johnny's inspiration is drawn from the life he sees around him, the things people gloss over... everyday stuff like family, fried breakfast, relationships, fear, envelopes and being run over.”

Beats Per Minute:
“Fusing the electronica of Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Kraftwerk & Yazoo with the Pop sensibilities of Blondie, The Killers & New Order, Simon Owen & Rachel Arnison have fused together all that was great about 80's synth pop with modern hip hop & trance beats. .... The result is Beats Per Minute. After a chance meeting, Simon suggested collaborating with Rachel on cover versions, but realising that there was a creative spark between them, they started working on original songs. With Simon doing the music in his home based studio putting an interpretation onto Rachel's lyrics. They are half way through writing and recording their debut album and are looking for gigs.”

Bohemian Jukebox presents Jayne Powell + The Authors + Dave Wilkie
+ Perrot’s Folly

Jayne Powell
Beautiful vocals weaving into rich harmonies, intricate guitar melodies, and skilfully thoughtful percussion with a country-folk sound. Jayne and her band bring a breath of summery fresh air to your ears. Their music is the sort of tranquil stuff that stuns you into a quietness not even the most hectic day could disturb. An array of eclectic influences from old time waltzy laments and locked in mellow grooves to quirky country soul. Jayne and her band have supported a variety of signed artists, such as; Nizlopi, and Kathryn Williams, as well as making numerous TV appearances, live radio sessions. They have independently released their own recordings, Dandelion Clock, The Chapel Session, and Could Be Anything.

The Authors
The Authors are 3 guys who love writing and playing music focused on melody, musicianship and lyric. Shades of Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Albert Hammond, Crosby Stills & Nash, and Jim Croce are all in there.

Dave Wilkie
Wilkie writes gentle, delicate songs of experience. Like you might expect a one-man acoustic Suede to sound like, if they only wrote and played at 3am.

Perrot's Folly
Chinook’s poetic, witty and fantastically wordy debut ‘Answering’ is nothing short of a masterpiece. Fact. In Perrot’s Folly he joins forces with fellow Mill’s and Boon member Cribbler. Naming themselves after a tower in Edgbaston that could well have inspired Tolkien they play excellent finger picked Psych-Folk. Think John Renbourn meets Syd Barrett in Ivor Cutler’s kitchen and you’re halfway there…

“A lovely little affair, mostly centring around singer-songwriters but with other stuff too. (Some quite surprising other things at times.) I liked the vibe, and indeed the value - four quid gets you four musical acts and a chit that lets you get a shot of absinthe for a pound. You can’t say fairer than that.” (russl.wordpress.com)

The Catapult Club presents So Called Enemy + The Rush Hour + Douglas Furs + Textbook Rumours

So Called Enemy are a Birmingham based band originally formed by Ryan Lowry in 2002.
As the band progressed, Matt Jones (the original guitarist) left, leaving Joe White (Drums) and Ryan (Bass & Vocals). Soon after, Fudge joined to play bass whilst Ryan took up the roll of lead guitarist and vocalist. After a few more months, Beth Elmer joined the band as the lead singer.

The Rush Hour:
Inspired by the critical acclaim of his work with Plutonik (http://www.integrityrecords.co.uk/) as founder member, producer, instrumentalist and arranger, Al Rowe embarked on a more personal songwriting project. With support from long-time friend Adam N on guitars and harmonies, Al recorded some eerie riddles. Once in demo format these tracks needed a kind of band-type thing.

Al contacted Nick H, who complied. He hooked up with Rich and Marcus. Al was having an interesting time trying to pound out bass guitar and vocals at the same time, so Nick contacted Chaz who was happy to enlist in The Rush Hour forces.

Rehearsals were productive; tunes created and crafted. First gig was February '07 at the Flapper & Firkin. It was 'fun'. Rehearsals continued. Recording of a five-track demo started with the drums in April 2007 and finished with the vocals and some nifty mastering by Nick in June. You can listen to them on this myspace.

After another spell of rehearsals, expansion and re-configuration of Rich's pedal-board, and with new songs added to the set by Rich and Nick, Al decided it was show-time! Dates were confirmed with The Catapult Club for appearances at The Jug of Ale, Hare & Hounds and Bar Academy.

Douglas Furs:
2008… Music is in trouble.

Sure “New Rave” was a nice distraction to get kids back on the dance floor, but can you really picture any of these bands making great second or third album?

The sad fact is that proper rock and roll is still lying under the Libertines’ shadow years after people should have moved on. Hell, Babyshambles don’t even sound like his former band.

Step up four lads with vastly different musical backgrounds who still understand the most important thing. Make sure there is a melody. With a tune you can hum firmly worked out they proceed to skuzz it up.

It’s not about the haircuts, the make of guitar they play or about posing to the groupies in the front row.

We are the Douglas Furs and we’d like one chance to make you think… and dance.

Textbook Rumours consists of Tom, Dave, Chris and their newest member Ben. After parting ways with their previous lead vocalist, the band is now entering an exciting new era full of drive and ambition to express their passion for music and to make their mark on the music scene.

They are also considering getting a keyboard player in so if you play keys get in touch

Sugarfoot Stomp + Party Peoples party

The Sugarfoot Stomp night is now into it's 4th year. DJ's Doris, Daisy, Deloros, Delphi, Dorothy and Dakota (that's alot of D's - I'm suspicious) run the monthly night at the Bulls Head in Moseley.

The music is from the 1920's to the 1960's and you'll hear artists like Patsy Cline, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Elvis, Bessie Smith, Doris Day, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, Joe Turner, The Ronettes, Slim and Slam, Wynonie Harris, , Ken Snakehipps Johnson, Buddy Holly, The Dominoes, Fats Waller, Ella Fitzgerald, Sandie Shaw, Nina Simone, Johnny Cash, Louis Jordan.

Hip Hop_Funk_Reggae

Also in the venue is Party Peoples Party with Munchbreaks Feva and Mister Muz.

Feva is a dj, mc and beatmaker from Birmingham UK. He has been djing for over 10 years but as more and more wackness has infested hiphop he has been forced to step it up and start representing first on the mic and now increasingly with beats as well. He has respect for all mcs who spit from the heart and with the same voice they talk with, all producers who are doing something different and all scratch djs who are not just cut copy cats. Feva lives in Birmingham. He teaches aspiring young criminals how to become aspiring young djs. He drives a leaky squeaky golf. He does not eat pork, beef or tomatoes (unless chopped or pureed). He listens to white people’s music too. He has a sebaceous cist on his head that he is waiting to have removed so that he can shave his hair more easily. He likes sunsets (everyone does). His daughter claims his favourite colour is yellow but it is actually dark blue.

Punk_Ska

Back in 2005/6 DJ Adam started off ‘Punk & Ska @ the Gallows’(John Bright St, Birmingham) as a weekly night playing the best in ska, punk and reggae. DJ Adam, shared the decks with the impeccably mannered DJ SMIJ . Together they took over Wednesday nights and soon began putting on shows featuring bands such as Mouthguard, Drongos For Europe, Self inflicted, The Cunts, Vigilante, Kamikaze Sperm, Jessi Eastfield to name but a few. However, in November 2006, something inexplicably terrible happened. Edwards No 8/Gallows fell victim to an arsonist attack rendering the night obsolete.
Things lay dormant until May 2007 when Mark Detrimental (pushed on by the brainpower that is the lovely Mel aka Miss Siren) decided to do what hadn't been done before - restart the night!
Starting at the end of Summer 2007, the new night – ‘PUNK & SKA AT SCRUFFYS’ is now held downstairs at Scruffy Murphys every month.

DJ SMIJ will be playing Punk (everything from OI to Pop), Ska, Rockabilly/Psychobilly, Reggae and if you’re bloody lucky some hip hop. They also like to play small and local bands. And if you want anything played, bring your CDs along.

Dirty Laundry presents The Lines + Lady Rain + their clubnight.
Fresh new indie, modern electro and a few classics (check out the list on their myspace)

The Lines:

Comparisons have been made to many a great bands of the past, most notably the sonic guitar histrionics of The Verve, but with influences stretched from Radiohead to The Rapture, The Lines deliver their songs with masses of energy and depth. It’s the amazing single-minded belief, coupled with an explosive live sound and songs with timeless melodies, that point to Alex, Chris, Dean & Ryan being destined for big things in 2008.

News of sold out local shows quickly spread to promoters up and down the country, and invitations came to support artists such as The Twang, The Charlatans, Editors, Jack Penate, The Holloways, Babyshambles, Little Man Tate and The Maccabees to name just a few.

Mosco:Disco with DJ’s Lucie, Jack Slack & Andreas

From their myspace:

‘Mosco Disco was created by Leanne, Lucie & Chloe in August 2003. Leanne liked messing around with vintage clothing and cut+paste, Lucie liked tinkering with vinyl and Chloe enjoyed baking and random bouts of unconsciousness. So we celebrated our little trio by launching a web-site and decorating the bond-cave (Red bar & lounge) with vintage clothing and cakes, calling it MOSCO DISCO PIPPADEE PARTY. Since then we have borrowed the creative talents of various Birmingham DJs - Scott Bleepz (Panic), Adam Shelton (below), TAK!, Matt Ridding (remake/remodel), Ross T (below), Jack Slack (Slackers Delight, Ping Pong Club), Ollie (Not Cricket) Satori, Kat, Guy Carlos, Dom, Chris. We also borrowed the pen-man ship of mosco people and Birmingham graffiti-artists to create papier-mâché shoes. Regular guests are Leannes pop-up-cut-outs, and ceramic cats have been known to grace our decks. Michael Valentine-west (AKA Twiggy) played live for us at the Rainbow and we took over the Kitchen in the Custard Factory for New Years Eve 2005, showing films and shorts in the Theatre. Mosco is now a regular at the Bulls Head in Moseley with resident DJ Lucie and we plan to do some one-off parties, more art-related stuff and will launch a new web-site soon. We LIKE TO PaRTY, LIsTEN TO ELeCTrO, 80s & SYNtH PoP, BOrrOW ThINGs, EATCAKES, PAPIeR-MACHe, cuT-OUtS.’

Crash Repeat play the second round of the Surface Unsigned Festival..and they are after your votes

Crash Repeat are a two-piece live electro band. Often improvising, they bring together a range of techno and 80's synth influences alongside busy rhythms, eclectic drum loops and weird vocals. Smitt and Crossen met in 2003 at one of Birmingham’s many depressing admin offices. Between shuffling papers they decided to collaborate on some progressive dance tracks and worked together on and off whilst Crossen, a keyboard musician and would-be producer since the age of 12, also made music for independent films and produced music for other bands. Eventually, in January of 2005, they joined up on a more permanent basis with two other artists to form electro-funk band ‘Jamaha Fut’. After a short run Jamaha Fut broke up but Smitt and Crossen, encouraged by their new sound, continued to work together under the name Crash Repeat. Stu has come a long way since his first 8 track sequencer and now spends almost every free minute programming new loops and sounds into an array of synthesizers and processors. When not dancing to Breakbeat or Techno, Smitt writes lyrics linked closely to his interests outside of the band, bringing together seemingly random subject matter, including everything from comic books to politics. During live sets they keep a loose improvised feel to the proceedings, Crossen develops the beats, bleeps and rhythms from behind his equipment whilst Smitt leaps about, energized by the music, keeping the crowd on their toes. They’ve played together now in a few placed across the West Midlands, recently taking part in a ‘Battle of the Bands’. Now they’ve got their eyes fixed on the dance-floors of Birmingham and the Black Country, eager to play for those with an ear for non-commercial, unconventional electro-techno.
