Rock_Spazz_Folk_Noise

Capsule present Howlin Rain + Mills and Boon

Ethan Miller sprang into the underground rock world with his band COMETS ON FIRE. Comets quickly came to the forefront of what would come to be defined as “The New Weird America”, a movement that darkly combined elements of Folk, heavy psychedelia, free formed existentialism, and atonality. A joyful noise comprises a Comets show, with Miller’s vocals being driven through an echoplex and re-shaped at will by fellow member Noel Von Harmonson. While Comet’s chaotic wall of sound is a feat of architecture and a beloved aspect by the fans, Miller had another voice and musical path calling through the sonic maelstrom.

Mills & Boon
Infamous locals channeling the spirit of Beefheart, creating their own ramshackle brand of rambling psych spazz folk. They always deliver a stunning live performance that bristles with a chaotic excitement and a sense that anything could (and might) happen, these are the wonderful drunks of times gone by, instruments in hand entertaining anyone they encounter.

Indie_Electro_Electro Bands

Birmingham’s Connect Four connects four bands with one thing - the sound. The beats you hear are triggered by the closing of switches, processed by microchips and transistors and outputted along wires.

Connect Four helps electronic acts with wide ranging styles converge - avant-guard to the poptastic; soaring synthetic strings to glitches, twitches and bleeps – all in one night.

Collaborating artists create every component of their music; investing in the design of their musical creations from the basic waveform upwards. This allows a breadth of musical experience impossible to achieve with many conventional instruments.

DJs, artists and performers bring additional colour and dynamism to the night. Expect surprises, prize giveaways and idiosyncrasies – its unlike any other live music event in Birmingham!

The next Connect Four takes place at the Island Bar, Suffolk Street, Birmingham on the 8th May. It will then run monthly on the second Thursday of the month.

Performing live at the next Connect Four – May 8th:

The $hit - www.myspace.com/shitmusic
“…are the FIRST, BEST, and ONLY Electro-Punk Casio-Crunk F*ck-Rock Glitch-Pop Disco-Metal Post-NintendoCore beat combo in the world… EVER’

Crash Repeat – www.myspace.com/crashrepeat
“…are a 2 piece live electro band. Often improvising, they bring together a range of techno and 80s synth influences alongside bust rhythms, electric drum loops and weird vocals.”

Girls That Scream – www.myspace.com/girlsthatscream
Whose name is “inspired partly by the girls in ye olde beatles videos, the ones that hurt your ears.. and also ruin the recording.. That kind of hysteria, is pretty f*cking cool, it takes a mysterious combination of factors to arouse such mentalist high pitched wailing, and it's the one thing, one day, I want this band to hear at our shows, because when you make those girls scream, you can be confident you've made it.”

Silver Factory Superstars – www.myspace.com/silverfactorysuperstars
“one of Britain’s brightest pop music hopes. His traditional English pop songs sear with melodies and captivate with heart felt lyrics. If you were to mix synthpop, epic orchestral swirls, an occasional guitar, then you will have the Silver Factory Superstars”

DJ sets from: The Codette Soundsystem – www.myspace.com/codettemusic
“a clash of electro beats brought to you by two of New-Wave Pop outfit Codette. In the blue corner is Bassist and Producer Jay, slamming down chunky breaks and beats. Opposing him in the red corner is Codette’s Synth wrangler Jacob, throwing pure and vintage electro into the mix.”

Films from Future Daze – www.myspace.com/futuredaze
“the brilliantly talented Ian Price, a creator and innovator of exciting high quality electronic music and eye-catching visuals.”

Also there will be previews of the acts playing at Connect Four on the Robocast (http://www.myspace.com/robocastradio) and Brumcast (http://www. myspace.com/brumcastbirmingham) podcasts.

Capsule present Cursed + Throats + Crimewave

‘Cursed formed amid a harsh Canadian winter somewhere ‘twixt 2001/2002. Armed with an arsenal of vintage amplitude and the know-how to use it to inflict maximum auditory trauma, Cursed has been giving the most seasoned soundmen grey hairs and ruining young men and women for several years now already. Cities left in ruins, honor-roll students implicated in violent stage-dives, permanent hearing damage, teen-age disobedience to all levels of authority. All these horrors and much, much worse - all true.

Finally, after a couple of years of pleading from Holy Roar, this country has produced a band that can stand toe-to-toe with Breather Resist, Coliseum and many of the bands on Black Market Activities. Think the energy of Converge and early Breather Resist married to the RIFF POWER of Curl Up And Die, Coliseum and Doomriders.
We hope that Throats help bring an end to all the shit metal this country is producing.

Crimewave are inspired by early 80's Boston Hardcore, SST Records, John Waters movies, Repo Man and late night karaoke bars, Crimewave play fast, thrashy and loud punk rock.

Below welcomes back mobile records bosses Anja Schnieder and Ralf Kolman for an all day bank holiday special. Since Anja’s debut two years ago Mobilee has grown to become one of Berlin’s most closely watched imprints; with a string of records that regularly shot to the top of the charts – and to the front of the crates – of the worlds best DJ’s. Half Time Rehearsal + Defiant True Blood + Feral Eve + Remain in Silence

Half Time Rehearsal are a Metal/Hardcore band hailing from Birmingham. Together for around 18 months now, they are making steady progress on the Hardcore scene having played with the likes of Hades Chariot, Lavondyss, Deadweight and A Dream Called Ocean (FR) to name a few.
Since a settled line up was announced, the music written has become a lot faster and technical with some bone crushingly heavy beatdowns but also including melodic choruses to boot.

These guys have also been progressing well in the Surface Unsigned Festival - this is what they had to say about HTR.

"A tight mix of Metal and Hardcore – they’ve got a sound that is at times almost progressive; with unconventional track structures and some well executed guitar work giving their music a distinctively innovative quality, while Jon’s excellent vocal and some strong percussion bring some real energy into the mix. It was a strong performance all-around from a band with some great material, an intense stage presence and some real potential." - SURFACE UNSIGNED.

Venue: The Hollybush, Cradley Heath
Time: 8pm onwards
Cost: £3/£4 (usually)

BORIS is a Japanese rock band formed in 1992. As of 2007, personnel are drummer Atsuo, bassist/guitarist/vocalist Takeshi, and guitarist Wata. Boris have explored psychedelic rock, noise, ambient, sludge rock, post-rock, stoner-rock and hardcore punk, along with more conventional, mainstream rock styles.Named after a song on the The Melvins' Bullhead, Boris formed in 1992 and released their first album Absolutego on their own Fangs Anal Satan label. Since then, they have released 17 studio albums (including Absolutego), and many EPs, 7" singles, and full-length collaborative recordings, on various record labels across the world. This show will be in collaboration with Michio Kurihara (Ghost, White Heaven).

GROWING“A kaleidosope of prismatic tones and juddering electronics forming a series of mesmeric constellations.” - Mojo http://www.myspace.com/growingsoundnyc

Transitional is the new project of musician producer Kevin Laska ( Novatron ) and long time Justin K Broadrick and Kevin Martin collaborator Dave Cochrane. The debut 'Nothing real Nothing Absent' offers a rich variety in their approach to sound combining crushing atmospheres through a mixture of electronic ambience, mangling bass lines and distorted epic layers of textured guitar. Injected with driving rhythms and effected vocal phrasing Laska and Cochrane build discordant worlds on an immense scale before pulling you down to another level of fear and ethereal bliss before kicking off with some more soul dismantling sonic disfunction. This is a band which can deliver both sonic tranquility and extremely heavy slabs of dense music and just about everything in between.

From Subb-an myspace

'Subb-an, aka Ashique hails from Birmingham, UK.With his variety of live sets Ash landed himself a residency at Birmingham’s respected ‘Below’. Known for it’s ever inspiring atmosphere and a finger firmly on the pulse, Below’s line-ups have enabled Ash to grow as an artist, supporting the likes of Mobilee artists Anja Schneider, Sebo K and Ralf Kollmann, girl-wonder Dinky and the UK’s own Jamie Jones and Clive Henry. Appearances at London’s The End, T-bar and Technique in Leeds, have ensured that Ash’s talent has not been confined to the West Midlands. The 2008 release of Italia on Leftroom, having received accolades from M8, Mixmag, and IDJ, has gained support from some of the leading names in the industry, with his productions being played by Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Sasha, Paul Woolford and Luciano to name but a few.The latest signing to Immigrant records, ’The Corridors Of Life’, released in May 2008 has support from Josh Wink, Loco Dice, Solomun, Jimpster and Soul Designer and will surely see this becoming Ash’s year , the fruits of his efforts to be rewarded with several planned releases and remixes.Confirmed for billing on coveted line-ups alongside Jamie Anderson and Jamie Jones, Loco Dice and the Mobilee crew, as well as summer dates in Barcelona with Jay Haze and Michael Ho, Below’s ’Like Minded’ Festival in Croatia and an additional residency with Immigrant’s T-bar parties, Ash’s talent is certainly one to monitor.'
